Knowing how to do the relevant tests in the lab is always a big plus. Don't look at that as a bad thing. It should put you at the head of the class. List the tests you know how to run. It's always easier to hire a person that's already trained.

Ok.

I have limited knowledge though - just what we have done in cla** - I can do it, but whether I know enough is yet to be discovered,

It is a very junior position however.

Not true ... your application, be it application form or CV, gets you the interview ... from there its the one that performs best during the interview who gets the job.

Make your application stand out from the others and you're half way there .. after that its down to you .. whether you are first or last choice based on the applications .. it can all change at the interview stage.

If it was just down to the application form, why would any busy employer bother with interviews?

A friend of mine interviews for the NHS.

They invite a load of goofs to the interview along with the preferred candidate. That way the one they want always gets the job!

They carry out the interviews as standard procedure. Most of the interviewers don't want to be there.

They're not the only people who do this.

If it's a junior position, they expect to train you. You'll be fine. The fact that you've done the tests is a huge positive for you.

Has not been my experience in over a quarter of a century in the workplace.

Assuming an equal measure of experience and/or knowledge .. the interview is wide open to all those who make it that far.

Practice your interview technique and you'll have a distinct advantage over the others.

Everyone applying for the position will be a graduate with the same set of university learned skills as you.

You need to try and appeal to them in the way you express yourself within the application.

I think that if you are going after a job that fifteen other people are going after and you all have similar backgrounds then really the only way you're gonna get the job is through the interview. I mean what are you gonna say "yeah i went to school for marine biology but no one else learned to talk to dolphins!"

I learnt that two years ago

I am working on speaking whale right now - and then I am moving on to phytoplankton.
