I think you're talking about Ad-Hoc networking where its p2p without a router between them managing the connection...
Your best bet is to run to bestbuy
Get a Cross over cable
Learn (by using google) how to set your IP of your Ethernet adapter, put static IP's on both and then share your files.
Otherwise you'll try AD-Hoc which isn't even covered in A+
