The heart has four chambers. The upper two are the right and left atria. The lower two are the right and left ventricles. Blood is pumped through the chambers, aided by four heart valves. The valves open and close to let the blood flow in only one direction.
People with congenital heart valve defects may need treatment with drugs. Some valve defects may be repaired with heart surgery].
Most people with defective heart valves will need to take antibiotics before certain dental or surgical procedures likely to cause bleeding. This will prevent endocarditis, an infection of the heart's lining or valves. Only a doctor familiar with a patient's condition can determine whether that person needs antibiotics.

So are what should you look out for in yourself/your children etc. to know if there could be anything wrong? I dont really know much about heart conditions, so I don't know if you would notice symptons yourself or if things are picked up in general check-ups

I think if you already have someone in your family that has heart problems, could be a sign as it can run in the family, my husbands family have heart troubles, and with my husband i noticed he used to go very blue in the face and at night when he was sleeping you could feel his heart racing, it was so bad it shook the bed, i urged him to go to the doctors and they confirmed that he had narrowing of the arteries also his left and right ventricles were clapping together! he is now on medication for life, and the hospital want him to have a Angioplasmy thingy done, to insert balloons inside his arteries, but at the moment hes finding it hard to come to terms with it.
His brother died at the age of 39yrs, with the same defects, hes also lost his mum and 2 uncles. I do keep a close eye on my 5 yr old son, but he seems fine at the moment, apparently it doesnt usually show up in children until they get much older.
