I study English literature. I love the old Gothic horrors like Lewis' The Monk.
The Goths took their name from the romantic Gothic horror tradition that continued into the late Victorian era with Bram Stoker's Dracula.
The origin of this dark horror fiction was in Germany. Gothic originally referred in English to Germanic literature that inspired the English Gothic horrors.
The origins of English Gothic literature coincided with the gothic revival - of gothic architecture and of medieval fiction. So Gothic also refers to medieval.
Often gothic literature is set in old gothic castles with gargoyles.
Today's Goths identify with Gothic literature themes and Victorian Gothic literature such as Dracula.
