I love The Descendants. I have really gotten into them recently. I don't know much about them, but I figured I'd start a topic for all those Decendants fans out there. Here are some lyrics to songs that I especially enjoy.

"Parents"

Parents, why won't they shut up?
Parent's they're so f**ked up.
They treat me like a fool
They take me for a fool
Parents...
They're so f**king dense
They look into the past
For future reference
Parents...
They don't even know I'm a boy
Just treat me like a toy
But little do they know
One day I'll explode!
Parents...

"Suburban Home"

I want to be stereotyped
I want to be classified
I want to be a clone
I want a suburban home
Suburban home
Suburban home
Suburban home
I want to be a statistic
I want to be masochistic
I want to be a clone
I want a suburban home
Suburban home
Suburban home
Suburban home
I don't want no hippie pad
I want a house just
Like mom and dad

"'Merican"

we flipped our finger to the king of england
stole our country from the indians
with gaul at our side and guns in our hands
we took it for our own
a nation dedicated to liberty
justice and equality
doesn't look that way to you
it doesn't look that way to me
the sickest joke i know

[chorus]
listen up man, i'll tell you who i am
just another stupid american
you don't wanna listen
you don't wanna understand
so finish up your drink and go home

i come from the land of ben franklin
otis redding, ellington
the country that i love
but it's a land of the slaves and the ku klux klan
haymarket riot and the great depression
don't get caught in vietnam
the sickest joke i know

[chorus]

i'm proud and ashamed
every fourth of july
you got to know the truth
before you say that you got pride

[chorus]

not the cops got taste 'cause the kids got guns
shrinks pushin' pills on everyone
cancer from the ocean
cancer from the sun
straight to hell we go

[chorus 2x]

My God, I dont mean to offend but The decendents Taking BAck Sunday and all that stuff isnt actually punk. And that Tony hawk proskater soundtrack is just a remake of all the good songs from old bands by new ones. It keeps me up at night.

The Tony Hawk, Taking Back Sunday stuff, I'll agree with, to some extent. But if you're saying that the Descendants are not punk . . . that cannot be tolerated. If they are not punk, there who is? They were right in there in the Hardcore scene - they kicked ass.

Yeah, all punk was completely political and never did anything else. Completely right. No emotions were involved at all - it was just politics.

Nope, sorry, but that isn't the case. It wasn't in the past, and it isn't now.

Many punk bands covered many different things, including emotions and thinking and such. Punk music had more to do with the fact that it was played fast and hard. Hell, many of Black Flag's songs were about beer and drinking - what's so political about that? But if they weren't punk at all, then what were they? And what the hell could be considered punk?

that is another misconception about punk...everyone thinks punk is about getting drunk and f**ked up on something....i find nothing punk about this...by the way...black flag is another overrated band...they arent realy all that underground either..and i never said that they had to be completly free of emotion either..i was refering to the emotions of "falling in love" and all that bulls**t...the only emotions shud be the heart and soul that goes into the rebelion. we arent out to tell you about how my heart was "smashed" by my ex-girlfreind, we want you to become aware of the lies, the hate, the greed, and the just pure f**king power hungry animals that are out there. i have no problem with you if u want to listen to emo and such..but please get ur steriotyping correct here...[/rant]

I'm just saying, punk doesn't have to revolve around rebellion. No, punk isn't about getting drunk and such, but it doesn't avoid those subjects, that's for sure, especially considering how self-destructive punk is - drugs are a quick way to "live fast, die young."

And if a song about "falling in love" is done well, it can still be punk. It depends on the quality of the band, their playing ability and their song-writing ability. A lot of bands write only love songs and sound awful and call themselves punk, yeah, but some punks bands (who really are punk) can do love songs and make them good. Strong emotions that aren't "revolutionary" can exist within the punk scene.

If the Descendents / All don't get to be included in punk, but complete garbage like anti-flag get included I no longer want to be considered a punk fan

I actually enjoy Anti-Flag but I totally agree. Anyone who thinks that The Descendents aren't Punk really never understood Punk in the first place.

Amen and Hallelujah...
Punks can sing about anything if it is in the right mind set, and it will still be punk.
(drinking and getting f**ked up is hella punk, by the way, but so is being political and challenging authority.)
Being in love is punk as f**k...
...But I do agree, although The Descendents are punk, they have turned pretty soft... not something I enjoy too much.
