I have been working on launching an internet business for almost a year. Just went public with the site 2 weeks ago. I have been going to as many free sites as possible.

The company is going with a Skype type business model at first, offering a free basic service, so I have been hitting up all my friends, family, and groups that I associated with to sign up and also pa** along to friends.

Good luck with the venture and stay focused. It is very easy to let a week off turn into a month.

I have had an online buisness that mirrors our retail store for 4 years now and I would never waste money paying for any service, I get phone calls all the time from businesses that claim they can get our site to number 1 in google and when I run their site its nowhere near the top. Make sure your keywords are specific to your goods on each page and use them in descriptions on the page they are sold on, when you change out an item rewrite the description, I have the number one position for several Skateboard related items I sell on Google, MSN and Yahoo by just being patient and keeping our site updated. I have thousands of links on other sites and none pointing back from our site and I did it all for free by asking for them. I have found that our site has been linked up without even asking on many sites just as a resource I suppose from their site.

I am starting up too ^_^ My first piece of advice would be to link with other sites. Just make sure you stay close to both your business idea and your target market.

Second, word-of-mouth and word-of mouse work. Get people talking about you through online PR. If you are selling products, try giving a few away as competition prizes. Letters to the Editor in print magazine can be quite good as well.

Finally, don't forget offline advertising. You can easily create leaflets on your computer and distribute them. In the UK, posting leaflets in sop windows work quite well.

Good luck with your venture.

Lynda,
Join one of the many gift programs and you'll get access to loads of free information, including marketing.

Just do a search for internet gift programs and you should find several.
