Reading is a part of me. Each and every book i read takes me on a journey deep into the world of its characters. They mean so much to me that i have trouble lending them to people!! I know many will think that silly but we're all different right??
Many people don't see it as such but is is my hobby, my education and my great passion. May the world keep on writing so as to keep us (or rather me) enthrawled and our bookcases filled!

I hear my students complain all the time about how they would much rather watch the movie. It irks me so. I like watching movies, especially when they are based on books, but there is so much that you miss from only watching a movie. We began reading to kill a mockingbird, and then halfway through we watched the movie. They were all so shocked when they realized what had been left out. It was a revelation to some of them. They don't realize how much they lose when they only watch the flickering box of doom!!

This is oh so true, i read Stephen Kings Dreamcatcher (fab book by the way) and then i saw the film. Ugh! Due to the fact that most of the story occurs via telepathy and within the minds of the characters the only reason i knew what was happening was because i read the book!! My husband was lost and lord knows how anyone was supposed to get it!!

On another note, why is it no one can do Stephen King's books justice on the big screen?? (the SHawshank Redemption and Green Mile being the exceptions of course!)

I love reading, books, magazines, anything. On my 45 minute drive to work I listen to books on CD. I think the reason more people don't read nowdays is two part: 1. parents don't read to their kids enough; 2. too much time in life now is based on electronic devices (tv, internet, video games, etc.)

I absolutely LOVE reading! I have been a reader from the start! I started reading when I was around 4 years old! I grew up with parents who read, so I was encouraged to read as well. However, I think one problem today is that parents are either not around (because they have to work) and/or they just don't care. It's sad. Reading is a very valuable skill. It does not have to be torture like many people make it out to be. Reading for fun involves the imagination. MAKE the story fun!! Sometimes when I am reading, I will get so absorbed in the book that I think I am actually there! If you explain this though to a kid today, they will think I am crazy. Television and the internet are also dangers, especially with the popularity of e-books, just reading the books on the internet. How CAN people do that? That hurts my eyes and gives me a headache. Plus there isn't the joy like there is in turning a fresh, clean page. Parents need to take time to just read with their children each night, or have a guardian do so if they can't be home at nights. They need to encourage their children to read, even when they are struggling. One trick I can share is to tell a kid if they don't like the book, don't finish it. Just start another. There are books out there for everyone. Also choose books based upon their interests. Don't give a girl who is into ballet a book about football. That won't work. But if you give her a book about ballet, she may really enjoy it. The most important skill is to NEVER make fun of a kid who is struggling. Everyone goes at a different pace!!! It is okay to be slow. Of course the problem can be a learning disability. If you suspect that, get help. That may be why the kid doesn't want to read, because he/she is embarrassed. You have to be encouraging or they WON'T do it and that is bad.

I think it is really sad how *most* people don't read anymore, but I do think that there are ways to make reading fun for kids and if you get them interested in reading when they're young it's something they'll always have with them. Being a teacher you're in a great position to do that!
