I don't understand is why would light be shinning off the helmets. Were in space right?

Uh, yeah, they're in space. And it's broad daylight on the moon. The moon is no farther away from the sun than the earth, comparatively. The sun is in fact brighter on the moon because there's no atmosphere to partially scatter the sunlight.

The sun is apparently quite brilliant and white on the moon. On earth it's slightly yellowed because the blue end of the spectrum is scattered throughout the sky.

Also remember that the Russians landed on the moon a couple of times as well.

Oh, by the way.

Look at any photograph taken of the ISS. Or the Space Shuttle. We know those are up there because we can see them with telescopes.

Notice anything about the black sky as taken from space? No stars there either.
