There's an email circulating that tells of the brutal treatment in 1917 at Occoquan, Virginia, prison, of women who had picketed the White House as part of the campaign to win the vote for women. The point of the email: it took a lot of sacrifice to win the vote for women, and so women today should honor their sacrifice by taking our right to vote seriously, and actually getting to the polls. The author of the article in the email, though the emails usually omit the credit, is Connie Schultz of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland.

Is the email true? a reader asks -- or is it an urban legend?

It sure sounds exaggerated -- but it's not.

Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'

Nov.15, 1917 was the nite when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because
they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.
When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

Any American woman who has ever voted , owned property ,enjoyed equal rights should read just a bit of the info on the history of womens rights and what the price that was paid to earn rights for women here, in North America? It was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

October 18th was the 80th Anniversary of the Persons Case in Canada, which finally declared women in Canada to be Persons!

Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they?

Women need to realize that it's been less than 100 years that we have had this right to have our voices heard and to be counted among the thinking and knowledgeable humans of this world.

some people dont realise how much of a privilage it is to have a voice and to be heard these days.. voting is holding power over your future environment..

whether your vote holds an advantage for you or in favour of something more sinister.. not that we dont have enough of it these days

your character determines your destiny..

It is so easy to say it's just voting or I own my property free and clear , and in my life time there has been a few VERY few times that some 'male chauvinistic pig has tried that manly man BS on me but more often than not everyone around at the time was on him like ugly on ape, and
while reading the story of how those women were treated by the prison guards with the wardens blessings and reading other accounts of how some of the husbands treated their wives if ever a whisper or a hint was heard about supporting the fight for women's rights , some hubbies threatened to have a wife committed to a insane asylum .
Before the right to vote and own property and all that these women paid the price for ,women were just a bit lower on the 'totem pole than a good horse or a favorite dog , and her children's well being depended solely on how happy she kept the husband.
I have been trying to google what women were considered before they were persons in Canada but ain't having any luck .
Anyone have any ideas on how to word the question ?

Canadian women born before 1929 were considered by law to be "non-persons." Five governments stated that women were ineligible to be appointed to the Senate because they were not "persons." In fact, British Common Law stated they were "persons in the matter of pains and penalties, but not in the matter of rights and privileges."

Women were put in jail, force fed and suffered a lot so that we had the right to vote. I do vote each time there is an election

Say what you will, this obstruction of sidewalk traffic has got to stop.
