I cannot help noticing that all the Kings and Quuens of England have the same middle name e.g.

Elizabeth the First
Henry the Eighth
George the Sixth

have royalty no imagination?

I've known a lot of Asian people in my time, and most have middle names.

Although there may be groups or villages where it just isn't done for some reason or other.

I had a lot of Vietnamese and Chinese friends in school in New Orleans. The majority of them had parents that moved here from their native countries, but they were born here. Most of them were bilingual and had an "english" name and their "native" name. Kim Vu, for instance, used her "native" name, Duc, as her middle name... because everyone else she knew had middle names. This seems to be pretty common.

I believe that middle names are, in general, kind of a "western" tradition, so those who were raised in eastern countries and have kids here don't really see the need.

That being said, most US-born asians with children that I know have given their children middle names.

Actually it depends on the area and / or dialect group one belongs to. Most people in China have only their single character name, and a single character surname... whereas the Chinese in South East Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam) have 3 character names. The 2nd character is not exactly a middle name, rather it's their own name, very much like "Anne-Marie".

Incidentally, I am Chinese (both my parents are Chinese, but Granny was from the Netherlands) but I don't have a Chinese name, and I can't speak / write / understand Chinese in any form to save my life! But I do have a middle name, though.
