I was lying the other night on a couch and I was with a female friend.
She said, "Can't you at least stay awake to finish the show?"
(We were watching How I met your mother.)
"I was awake..." I replied.
"No you weren't you were snoring..." She said.
Just then eyes open and everything I snored...it was so weird
We both laughed and she told me I'm the only guy she knows that can snore while he is awake...is this normal?

Sleep apnea and blocked sinuses are reasons for snoring.
Tissues in your respiratory system vibrate, which causes the snoring sound. This can happen (but usually doesn't), though it can happen while you are awake. Sleep apnea means of course that for a few brief seconds the 'breath' is interrupted ... yada, yada ... causing the tissue vibration which causes the snoring sounds. Possible solutions: reduce allergies naturally as much as you can, take medicines for allergies or for relief of blocked sinuses, take a sleep study which may cause you to be prescribed a CPAP machine. Any of this can be googled.
Hubby snored for years and years, and at first I found it soothing ---- lol, it also offset my tinnitus (white noise). He did not accept my diagnosis, but when an ER physician heard him snoring in the waiting room, the sleep study was prescribed, and then the CPAP machine. Snoring has stopped altogether! ******************************************************************
=========Bottom line, yes it can happen while awake!

You could have been sleeping; semi-awake. Maybe you have narcolepsy and don't realize it? They could be in the middle of chatting to you, or walking across the street, or anything really, and just fall sleeping.
The duration of sleep varies..

I'd get checked if I were you, if it continues.

yeah people snore when awake, its when the back of the throat relaxes so you have to be in a sleepy state but you can still be awake and snore.

The main reasons for snoring are obesity, alcohol, smoking and nasal deformity.

I sometimes snore when I'm awake, it's to fend off people that I just can't be bothered talking to.

But in all seriousness, I have read that you can snore while awake if you have sleep apnea. This is because your breathing can become abnormal and it does give you the chance of snoring awake.

It could also be like sTreetAngeL has mentioned and you could have narcolepsy. It's quite common so don't worry too much, it's just a bit dangerous if you're carrying out activities which involve crossing roads or driving, where you can risk yourself and others.

Two relatives squared off with each other. I stepped into

Hi Gang:
I'm a newcomer here. Just want to suggest that if you or your partner snores, try snoring for five minutes or so while awake on purpose. I have a thoery that the more you snore awake the less you'll snore asleep.
Worth a try!

I've woke myself up snoring before, don't think I've ever snored while I was awake.
