This is a thread dealing with the modern outbreak of Ebola.

I know the illness has been around since the 70's.

Here's some flowers for all the sick and dying.

Best wishes to all you TFS members. Here's hoping no one gets Ebola

Okay I'll start:

There once was a man from Angola
He soon showed the signs of Ebola
The mom and the cat filled blood in a vat
from the corpse of the man from Angola

I met her in a club in Li-ber-ia
I asked her if "ill?"
and in a strained weak voice she said
E-boo la
E-Bo-L-A 'Bola
'Bo-Bo Bo-bola eBoo-la...

One of the scariest things about Ebola to me is that the symptoms early on are just FLU like symptoms.... as we go into flu season (in the USA anyway....)

Not funny. But it does remind me of Capt. Tripps.

Is society not due for a catastrophic plague?

Hi! I just flew in from Sierra Leone
and boy are my arms tired!
<ba-da crasssh>

I'm not sure if it's just exhaustion or the flu-bug, but I'm going to stop by the Quicki-Med...

...On my way home from the Browns game! Woot!!

(for the regionally displaced: The Browns are a local Professional American-Football team)

There was a husky young man from Angola,
Who asked for a sip of my cola,
I replied, "You sound horse,
You can have some of course,"
Now we're both gonna die of Ebola.

And on a serious note, my heart genuinely goes out to the people afflicted. This disease is as much a product of global greed and inequality as anything else. People in slums with no or little access to clean water, and in cramped conditions, medical staff with little or no safety gear... this could become a major issue.

The disease might be difficult to catch, but the problem is that the three week incubation period gives people a lot of time to move around. And, from the time they start to show any symptoms, they are contagious. It is not unreasonable that people will start showing with Ebola who have no reasonable grounds for being considered "at risk." If that happens, the disease will potentially spread pretty quickly... not that I want to spread any panic or alarm of course.

The hard reality is that South Africa has benefited from British Imperialism--Infrastructure, parliamentary law and so forth. Even now with a backlash from apartheid, the South Africans fare a mite better than the Northern folk who have serious inability to mobilize the medical aide to remote regions without significant outside support.

Should the word 'due' be switched to 'ready'. Survival of the fittest sounds about right to me.
