Yeah, there were a lot of different angles coming in from the late 80's that were shaping a return to a harder, guitar based sound that had been largely absent in the mainstream, or even alternative, landscape for some time. Husker Du was another influence.

Yeah, it's a shame really, that they faded away into an afterthought almost immediately after they broke up, right when they were hitting their peak, too, songwriting-wise.

Nobody from the 80's hardcore scene, in my opinion, ever reached the level of tunefulness that Bob Mould did. Very influential in that regard. New Day Rising, esp. "Makes No Sense at All", is a good example of that, as well as their last album, "Warehouse: Songs & Stories", including this one, my particular fave:

Good song.

I think one of the main things that set Husker Du apart was that they became transitional out of the hardcore scene and into the "tunefulness". 80s hardcore was, let's face it, notoriously polarized in that once you got into that scene for the most part that's where you stayed as a band. When early 80s hardcore died a vast majority of the bands died with it rather than evolve into other directions the way the likes of Husker Du and Bad Brains did. I remember watching an interview with Hank Rollins and he said that the irony was that a lot of the hardcore guys from that era were the most closed-minded when it came to music because people would say "well..can't I explore this avenue of music and move in thsi direction" and they'd just get a tight-lipped "NO!" because it wasn't hard core.

A lot of talent, sadly, went wasted because of that and bands like Husker Du just didn't have the fan base once they evolved.

Definitely, and many that did want to evolve or explore like that just broke up and did it under new bands/monikers, such as Ian MacKaye ending Minor Threat and forming Fugazi.

that was Soundgarden

Eh, not so much for me with those two either.

I was more into Bush, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, Sunny Day RE, early Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Everclear, and Semisonic. There are others, too, as I just not thinking of them atm.

You might like like Temple of the Dog , also from the 90's. It was conceived by Chris Cornell(partial lead vocals) and Eddie Vedder providing lead and backing vocals.

I know them, and couldn't stand them, probably because they played that hunger song over and over and over and over again on the radio stations here for several years lol.

It's funny how, other than Nirvana's Nevermind and a few Pearl Jam records, I really wasn't into the actual grunge genre, but was more into the stuff that influenced it and spawned from it afterwards.
