Chaotic celebrations after Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey fell a little flat when the prized trophy was dropped from the top of the ceremonial open-top bus.

One of the players, Sergio Ramos, managed to lose his grip on the cup after holding it above his head.

It ended up under the wheels of the double-decker bus before being retrieved by police on the ground, who returned it to the bus driver.

Thousands of euphoric fans watched the trophy fall after packing into the Spanish capital to welcome the champions home.

Probably more exciting than the game was! Apart from the goal and Barca's disallowed goal it was a terrible game. Specially considering those are two of the best teams in the world.

It's not the first time something like this has happened. Back in the early 90s, England beat Scotland in the Calcutta Cup match at Murrayfield and were duly presented with the trophy. At the post match social England forward Dean Richards and Scottish forward John Jeffrey were drinking out of the trophy and decided they would go for a drink in the bars of downtown Edinburgh. They took the trophy with them.

After a couple of hours, and a few pints with fans in the bars, they hailed a cab but unfortunately, Jeffrey dropped the cup and it went under the wheels of the cab. It was completely flattened and they had to take it back and 'fess up to what had happened. Now, this trophy is the work of very highly skilled Indian silversmiths.... it's a beautiful thing..... The repair was extremely expensive and Richards and Jeffrey had to pay for it out of their own pockets.

Richards was philosophical about the incident, he said..... "We went out with the Calcutta Cup, and we came back with the Calcutta Shield".

Thing of beauty.
