the whole H1N1 flu strain broke out earlier this year during the southern hemisphere winter. We are out of winter now and there was no vaccine for us, we just had to deal with it the natural way.
Yes there were some deaths but typically the person had other complications prior to picking up the flu. We got hit big time here May/June and at the university I was at you were basically told to stay away. At exam time at the end of June special arrangements were made for anyone who was sick to prevent it spreading to others.
I didn't catch it. But for a couple of months the numbers of reported cases was high and then they slowly receded like any bug does. Basically its not on the conscience of the normal New Zealander anymore.
It will pass and this strain of flu is not going to bring about the end of the world. I agree giving vaccinations to those in high risk occupations such as doctors etc. When it was at its peak here basically you went to the doctors and before you could even set foot in reception you had to put on a face mask regardless.
One positive I can think of is everyone is now a hell of a lot more critical of anyone who goes about conducting business in a public place whilst sick. There is a greater appreciation of staying at home and clearing it up in due course rather than try and slog it out and infecting others in the process.
