23/F/Out in Nature, Wisconsin Join Date: Mar 2008 | this is probably not the right place for this, but i don't care... it should be a journal, but i want real responses and not just people being all nice just cuz it's in my journal (if anyone responds at all anyway)... so tough cookies, my rambling is going here today...
so... i want to go to collage... i've been thinking about it lately, and i need to start taking some collage classes; my brain is starting to feel like jello and it needs to be stretched again... probably just a class or two to start with to get back into the flow-- i'm thinking online classes would work out best, as much as i'd like interaction with other students... it would just work out better, as i don't want to go to school enough to miss out on my kid... so question one-- where's a good place to get started with online college? if no one feels like answering, i'll just go to the local school and see what they can hook me up with though...
the only other problem with college... i know that i want to go, but there's nothing i really want to do with a degree... it'll be a nursinig degree by default, but i don't actually want to be a nurse; there's just nothing else i want to do with my life that requires a degree...
although, pyschology has always been an area that fascinates me... thinking about how people think is the only 'real' career path that has appeal to me... so maybe get a nursing degree and get a job in the psych unit, then go from there onto a therapist career (or research which i would prefer, but is much more elite)? i know, most of the people who know me on here would think that the idea of me working with psych patients, or becoming a therapist is a joke, but to the people i know in real life nothing makes more sense... my psych teacher was actually really pissy with me for not having immediate college plans...
in either case, i need to go start going to school again... and with no other direction, it will be towards a nursing degree heavy on psych classes... i wish i could just go to school and take all the literature, theology, and anthropology classes that i wanted to though... i don't really care for biology or mathematics, but they're mildly interesting i suppose...
but i don't know... so ramble over... | | | Edited: November 11, 2009 @ 06:24

My suggestion, try a community college so you get your basics classes which you WILL need for any degree out of the way. That is your 2 year AA which can be focused towards psychology/nursing if you want or liberal arts if you want literature or just a general AA. That gives you two or however long it takes you to finish your A.A to think about your future plans. In that time you can figure out what exactly you want to do, what university you want to transfer to, what exact area you are going to major in, and even do some internships or mentoring programs to help you figure out your interest.
Once you get your AA, its only two more years for your bachelors and this way you're not wasting your time not knowing what you want to do. You're just getting rid of the basic classes you need for any degree while you thinking about it.
Also your community college's often focus at working adults. So even if you have a kid, classes are geared towards a working adults schedule. You don't need to take a lot of classes, two classes, thats just two nights, or even one night, or one afternoon a week. And you still have the rest of the week to spend with your son. | | | Edited: November 11, 2009 @ 18:41

Sorry, you need a degree and training in order to be a licensed therapist/counselor. Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about.

Thats what I was saying. Sorry i was talking to Chisa when saying that's not true in response to "not many jobs I'm interested in require a degree."
I was saying, thats not true. MANY require a degree, even jobs you think that don't need a degree require a degree.
Sorry for the confusion.

and actually i was saying that not too much that i want to do with my life requires a degree... not really talking about jobs specifically, but a high ranking career path has never really been one of my life's ambitions...

May I ask what do you want to do? What do you mean by "not too much that i want to do requires a degree." What is that not too much so I can get an idea.

23/F/Out in Nature, Wisconsin Join Date: Mar 2008 | okay... i want to write a book (marketing it is irrelevent to me)... i want to get my sky-diving license... i want to market my collages, which i am already... i want to become a proficient rock-climber... i want(ed) to live in a van for a while and hike/kayak/camp around the country... i want to read lots of literature... and other things...
nursing isn't quite a passion for me... it's secondary to the things that i really want to dedicate my life to, but it's the only one that has the potential to be a lucrative career...
above all else though... i want to know that i raised my own son... not a daycare/babysitter while i spent all my hours in class or doing homework... at least until he's in school himself...

that actually is on my list too... but thus far i haven't had a career direction (i didn't decide to start this nursing thing until i got pregnant), and it's a lot of money to blow just going for the fun of it...
and now... i'm thinking about starting a few classes online until he starts school, and that's where i'm at with that...
not sure where the point is in all this rambling, but it's good-- kind of thinking out loud in a sense...
