I don't think you are using the word instinct in the proper manner here. Instinct means that the child would be born with that trait. Children are not born to fear other peoples no matter how tall or short, fat or skinny, light or dark skin. The baby will suckle any teat that is offered to it.
i feel my usage is fine... we instinctually fear the new and unknown... something foreign to us makes us uncomfortable... be that people, situations, sensations, whatever... new things require some getting used to... it's a human instinct, and for solid reasons... we may not fear people at birth, but that's because we don't have the capacity to think about the danger other people could pose-- a baby is more concerned with sounds, smells-- their fears are based solely on different sensory experiences...
and with the world being so much more integrated today, babies are used to coming across different types/races of people... so they learned through experience not to worry about them before they were even aware of that learning...
anybody else have some thoughts on this? is it really not making sense?
