She looked at me with big brown eyes,
my saddened heart needed to help.
Mama's inside that nasty place,
help me please; she was cold and alone.
I asked the police to go and trace,
a drunken mother who forgot she had,
a small child, now that was too sad.
Looking at me, water leaked down her face,
what could I do I had no rights or place?
Her mom wouldn't come, what could I do?
The police said she can go with you.
She looked at me with big brown eyes,
moppy hair, dirty, barely clothed.
What could I do as I watched her heart bleed?
Take her, that's what she really needs.
The night was the longest I ever had spent,
we drove in silence to get proper permits.
I doubted her mom would notice, we cried,
picked her up, held on, she sighed.
When we got home she was sound asleep,
just for tonight her sleep would be deep.

This is a true story. Lizzy lived with us for 2 years.
