I read that there was up as many as 20 people watching ages from 15 to early twenties and so far 7 arrests of the people that were being watched . That's unreal that for that many 'on lookers' to be afraid to interfere or leave to call it just doesn't have a ring of truth IMO.

I interrupted a rape in progress once , I took the worse a** whipping I ever had and in the end I did no good at all . when he was done knocking the dog s*** out of me he just went right back and finished what I had interrupted. If ever I have come up on something like that again I get the hell out of there and to the closest phone . it wasn't a gang rape but she was in the hospital for 2 weeks and had her jaws wired for several more weeks .

I am glad you tried atleast..

My suggestion for interruption a rape:
Either sneak up and hit the guy with a blunt object in the head.
or
Call 911

Ah got you! I was thinking you were thinking something else was going on. No, I quite agree with you. Something sure as hell should have happened. They could have even possibly left and called?

When I first read the story ,one of the things I thought was it may of been gang related but after more than 7 arrests and no mention of any thing about gangs, then the question of none of the people watching did anything to help or to go for help came to mind.

Call 911 then sneak back and hit the attacker with something.

Simple. Victims often report that they feel they brought this on themselves and continue to replay the events an punish themselves. KNOWING that the perpetrator was wrong and NOT themselves helps them heal more quickly. The abuser would be faced with public punishment or perhaps banishment in the days of old.

I think it is typical of most victims to look for fault with themselves, and subsequently someone will tell them it is the abuser that is wrong! Your other statement where you say something about telling them "that is what grey wolf did..." seems to me like passing the blame for the abuser. In my limited experience the abuser I spoke of was neither punished or banished (which by the way I kind of see as just passing the problem onto others), this person was in fact "protected" and continued to abuse.

That is why I think the traditional First Nations approach much healthier. And no it does not pass blame. It compares what the abuser did to a story that has a character that did something simular. - teaching morality.
Banishment then is almost a death sentence- it's not like priest being sent to another community or something like now a days.
