I think it's silly to say that people who don't pay up front for the opportunity to do work for you are less motivated. There are a thousand things out there asking for your money in exchange for the chance to make some money, and who knows how many are scams? People who pay for that aren't motivated, they're just gamblers.

If you enjoy music you could do online promotions (ie join a street team), you don't get paid but it does fill up your time. Also if you do a good job you get free concert tickets, merchandise and cd's etc.
