can anyone help me, i recently tried to reformat and reinstall xp on my computer, everything was fine till i got to the enter product key when i realised i had inserted the wrong (old very old) windows cd which i do not have a key for and it is not the one i wanted to install. now when i switch on pc it just resumes setup from where i left of and i cant seem to be able to install windows that i want to

The CD key will be on the back of the PC (if its a desktop) or underneath if its a laptop.

its a 2nd hand pc that came with the disc but no stickers, basically i was wondering if i am able to cancell this set up process and start anew

Well if you have no code you going to have to buy a new one.

You could try phoning microsoft and explain you lost it, but i doubt that would work.

If you cannot complete the 'current' installation, why don't you interrupt the boot-up [depending on the Manufacturer, with F8, F9, F10, F11, etc.], and change your Boot Configuration to start your computer from your CD-drive.
After you have done that, you can place the correct XP Install Disk in the drive, and then,.... allow the computer to boot up. After the install is complete, you can then go back into the Boot Configuration and change it to start from your hard drive.

Then you must become reallllly resourceful! Do you have a second PC? Or, do you have a second hard-drive that you could install in the first PC?

I have done such things as taking the HD from one machine, sticking it in a second machine, and using the second machine's OS, reformatted and installed software on the 'other' HD, then removed it from the second machine, and stuck it back in the first, and was able to re-boot the first machine, without a problem...
