I like alcohol but i don't drink that much at least not as much as my friends do.

I can have fun with both, though i must admit this is the first weekend where i drank my a** off, between pub crawls, parties and restaruants i was having so much fun. But it was also the first weekend where i wasn't hungover and s*** the next day.

I don't see the need to belong to a "movement" to remain sober.

Be who you are, no movement necessary.
I don't know about 'straight edge' - maybe a lil
bit 'anal', and a whole lotta weird.

I know a couple of straight edge people. I have no f***ing idea why they went to the pub apart from to sneer at people who were drinking and smoking.

If people want to live straight edge then fine but FFS it doesnt make them better people for it.

CM Punk is straight edge. It's not about abortion or not eating meat. It's about smoke, drink, drugs.

Everyone has some type of vice.

Its a couple of them, they go to the pub and drink mineral water. I think they go for the music.

At first i thought they were ok, i dont care if a person is sober or not. But then i heard them talking about people in an incredibly condescending way.

Sure they have strength of character to not smoke or drink and be vegan but it certainly turned them into a couple of self rightious twats with superiority complexes.

I was talking to someone in the pub last night who described himself as being 'straight edge'. He said he doesn't smoke, doesn't drink, doesn't do drugs, is opposed to abortion and is a hardcore vegan. He said it was some sort of hardcore music movement.

Now I'm trying not to be judgmental, but I couldn't help but find it a little bit weird. I started to wonder does that show us something about our society? Perhaps straight edginess should be the 'normal' way to be. Whats thoughts?

Nah you don't have to be that straight edge, It's more of a balance for each individual personality.

I like to call it mental risk management.

Like if you have you have an addictive personality you should probably stay away from a lot of addictive substances.

If you really want to try addictive substances and have an addictive personality then you should strengthen that weakness before doing so.

Living in this way means you really have to be introspective knowing your self.

Attacking mental an emotional problems like a math question or a chess game.

Also individuals are always changing and when a persons beliefs and state of mind and fears remain static it is contrary to our nature and creates spiritual and mental blocks.

One thing mankind is truly a master of is limitation.

In a universe dominated by change we try and crystallize parts of our selves for various reasons.

In essence society and history has shaped us to be producers and consumers, distracted by the wrongful use of our curiosity to make sure the majority of us keep this thing rolling.

It uses parts of our nature to accomplish goals contrary to our whole true nature.

But science has already proven that were not living in the society best suited for us, so it's up to each individual to take more initiative in personal development and creating mental tools to help you.

As a part of a pop culture study with a class (Society and Culture) I studied the Hardcore music scene - including SxE.

I've met people who are so SxE that they don't even eat sugar or drink coffee, etc.

The guy I play music with is SxE, but it's not that he made a conscious point (in some ways), he just never started.

Largely, people who are straightedge, I find are incredibly pompous and lofty about their choice. If not that, then they have no idea what they are so vehemently fighting.

I have no problem with the idea of a support-identity for those who choose to act this way - god knows its hard - but a lot of the time they try to speak authoritatively on things they know absolutely nothing about. They're generally, at best, attempting to compensate for their inability to let go. It's this superiority that s***s me - good on them, but talk to me about it, don't piss it all over me from above.
