I can tell you I have been through too many debates on this topic to seriously want to jump into another one, but I want to throw this idea out there.

Personally, I started off hating all abortions and zealously defending that position (which I still do, for the most part)...but enough debate has shown me there is nothing to be gained from two immovable sides of an arguement. The fact is this: abortion exists as a medical practice, and there are some (if rare) cases where I find it difficult to argue against.
Essentially, I think that the real topic of abortion comes down to the idea of responsibility towards your actions...as well as realizing the very real consequences that come of those actions.

Thats why I think abortion should only be allowed in these few specific circumstances: rape, and any situation where the mother would suffer serious physical or mental illness from delivery/prolonged pregnancy (supported by at least 2 doctors who can support the case). On another debate site, someone proposed my "compromise" was similar to the New Zealand policy on Abortion: link [en.wikipedia.org] (although I am unsure about a few parts of this policy). Either way, I think its a place to start, rather than saying all-or-nothing, which pleases much less of the population and really does no justice whatsoever.

Firstly I will not compromise on abortion until the profilers all become vegans, otherwise they all look like specieist bigots.

Secondly, "...when two opposite points of view are expressed with equal intensity, the truth does not necessarily lie exactly halfway between them. It is possible for one side to be simply wrong."
Richard Dawkins

Thirdly as stated in the link, here in New Zealand it is effectively "abortion on demand" despite what the statutes say. It is simply the case of no politician being bothered changing the statute to reflect the actuality.

And the Abortion ball has been hit over the nets here more times than I care to mention.

Most of them start out like yours then turn into a bun fight as to who has the rights to abortion and who doesn't,whose Ideas are right and whose aren't then quickly deteriates, into a name calling exercise.

Always reminds me of Jerry Springer for some reason.

People alway assume life is good, but what if the girl doesnt want a kid, or is incredibly stupid or mal-mannered, unfit to raise a kid.

Adoption?

Well, there's hundreds of homeless kids today, why put another kid into that world.

Why can't everyone just mind their own damn buisness? Nosey neighbors are nothing but a pain in the ass.

I've never seen abortion as a horrible thing, I mean I know it's not a fantastic thing, but taking birthcontrol is like aborting everyday. I don't see much of a difference.

Thats what our abortion policy is meant to be, if the pregnancy will cause serious damage to the mother. It has to be signed by 2 doctors, however there are very few drs who will say no, and try to offer alternatives. Private clinics have two drs on standby who will simply sign it.

I think it should be more regulated, but i do not think it should be made illegal again, we will just go back to backstreet abortions.
