What's the problem, exactly?

Farmers aren't stupid. Some of them try to get around Monsanto's licensing agreements for their special breeds of crops in an effort to save money. Many of them get caught and sued.

Problem:

Not all farmers use Monsanto's crop by choice, but the crop is germinated by nearby fields.

Monsanto will then take tests of plants in the neighboring crops to find plants with their plants Roundup DNA in them and sue the farmers for infringement when they find a mixed plant...

I've heard that before, but from what I understand it's virtually impossible for a commercial farmer to "accidentally" have his crops mix with GE, copyrighted crops. I've repeatedly heard that it's somewhat common (though hush-hush) practice among commercial farmers to breed GE strains into their own crops. Lots of farmers simply buy the seeds every year from a company like Monsanto anyway - and obviously lots of farmers want to get around that somehow...

I think it's a bit like Bittorrent or Napster or whatever. Sure, people claim it has all these legitimate uses, but ultimately it's mostly used for copyright infringement. Everyone does it and no one admits to it, but a few people are nabbed here and there by the copyright holders..

From what I've heard, it just takes a good wind for germination between crops to occur...
