The Day Off

Act 1 Scene one:
David’s Bedroom


(Lights turn on and shows David in his bed. The phone rings, David waits until after the first ring to wake up, he goes up to the phone stumbling and wiping his eyes. He picks up the phone)

David: Hello? Hey what’s up? (Yawns) Oh, really? Okay then. (Short pause) so your coming to my house? Well what time?

(Jimmy walks in)

Jimmy: Now

David: (Hangs up phone) Hey! Umm… what are you doing in my house Jimmy?

Jimmy: well, I think it’s about time we had a break.

David: I’m listening

Jimmy: (Whispering) Were going to skip school

David: Skip school!?

Jimmy: (Runs over to David and cover his mouth) Would you shut up! Do you know what your parents would do if they heard we were skipping school!! (Takes hand of his mouth violently and lays on David’s bed)

David: (Pacing up and down his room) Well if we did skip school-which we won’t- what would could we do?

Jimmy: (He sits up) what couldn’t we do! We could ..ahem.. “borrow” (Does air quotes) your parents money, spend it, and then replace it with counterfeit!

David: (Stares at Jimmy for several seconds) That might have been the most grotesque syllables that has ever come out of someone’s vocal chords and out their mouth and has been my great displeasure to have slithered in my ear and banged on my eardrum and sent to the brain in just fractions of a second.(Starts breathing deeply)

(Long pause)

Jimmy: So…….does that mean you don’t want to do it?

David: (Sighs and tries to leave)

Jimmy: Hold on their partner! (Runs and stops him from reaching the door) Just think of the stuff we could do while your parents are away.

David: I’ll tell you what we could do, we could get busted for playin’ hooky! Don’t you think that it might be a bit suspicious to people if they see two 12 year old boys walking around Rochester with no parents?!?!?

Jimmy: Puh! No! I do it all the time!

David: HUH! (Steps back and covers mouth) And you’ve never gotten caught?

Jimmy: (Shaking head) Nope! And if I can do it, you can(Pokes David). Besides have you ever broken a rule besides that spitball accident? Think of the infinite possibilities! we could do almost anything we want to! So, whadaya say?

David: Ya know what, Your right! (Jumps on bed and raises his fist) Today, I David Joeski shall break the biggest rule of school! Never skip it!

Jimmy: Now there’s the David I’d like to know! C’mon lets go! The more time we have to better!

(David jumps of his bed an follows Jimmy out of the room)

David: (Just before they reach the door) You know that spitball thing really wasn’t an accident.

Jimmy: Oh yeah sure

(They walk out and the lights fade)
