Rice is Australia's third largest cereal grain export, and the ninth largest agricultural export so rice exports , (and cotton) not only keep people off the dole but means we are bringing some of the money back into the country instead of sending it out.
The more we can export the better we can protect ourselves from global influences. The Surplus that Rudd has tapped into to keep Australia's economy from following USA is mainly due to what we have exported. Without it we would be worse off by now.
Not just cotton and rice irrigated from the Murray the the way.
NSW - mainly pastures (sheep,cows etc.), cereals, rice, grapes and citrus.
VICTORIA - Pasture followed by grapes, cereals and orchards
SOUTH AUSTRALIA - horticulture and pasture
