I love (modern) country music. A lot of people here in the UK will dismiss it without ever listening to any. I think a lot of people were put off in the past by the miserable "my wife's died and my dog's left me" theme that a lot of it had. Also, there was (and still is to a certain extent) a lot of banging on about how great God is, despite all these tragedies that these people were singing about having endured.

I totally agree. Although I do have to say I believe one of the main reasons people tend to assume country sucks is because of the morons who think of 'County folk' as red necks. Seriously its NOTHING like that. Myself I used to hate it, but I got into cuz of my husband. And I am glad, the music is beautiful and it really makes you realize how ignorant most rap music is. I can't listen to it at all. And country people are the most generous, hard working, and appreciative people I know. Literally I moved from the city, to the outskirts of my town and the difference in the attitudes of the people i see out on this end is tremendous. I love it now! It keeps me in such a better mood altogether.

Firstly.... I do not like rap. it's musical algae, and exists on pretty much the same intellectual level.

I have mixed feelings about country music. The first "country" song I ever heard was Billy Ray Cyrus' Achy Breaky Heart. I was just a little kid at the time and me and my friend Michelle got the line dance steps off pat in about three minutes flat. And that seemed to be about it.

Country has crossed my stream of consciousness from time to time and while some of it is interesting, it never really grabs me.

Another thing that puts me off is the constant "God" references and emotion ridden, doom laden, tearin'-my-heart-apart themes that are simply depressing. I'm not a religious girl, and I don't want to be driven to self-harming through musically induced depression.

Whilst I can't say I don't actually DISLIKE country, I can't listen to more than a few songs without wishing I was doing something else. It simply doesn't hold me.

Another thing, with living in Britain, there is a bit of a social stigma. Country and western afficionados are often generally regarded as being a bit sad. Like, they live in places like Milton Keynes and Croydon and they wear cowboy hats..!! They call each other "Tex" and affect the most ludicrous drawls. Whilst there is nothing wrong with people enjoying themselves as they will.... everyone has the right to have a good time in their own way..... I just can't see myself being a part of that.

So, fellas....... I hope you enjoy your music and your entertainment. Live and let live is what I say. But I'm afraid that other than an occasional listen in to a country song that has a nice catchy tune and some easy going lyrics which I'll enjoy for what it's worth... I'll pretty much let it pass me by.

Have fun, y'all.

Regards.

Listen to the soundtracks of "O Brother where art though" and "Juno", it may convert you.

Those are both more folk than country.

"Country" in the US means modern pop-country like Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, etc. It's all very repetitive and boring. There are some exceptions - the best of country music can be intensely emotional and dramatic and fantastic (particularly a lot of Garth Brooks, some old Reba stuff, Martina McBride) and some of it can hit just the right combination of funny and true (a lot of Hank Jr, some Alan Jackson and Brooks and Dunn), but most of it is really just absolute crap.
