Anyone have suggestions for a free, user-friendly game maker? (keep in mind this is for someone with little experience in programming)

Try using Java.

System.out.println("Welcome to the castle";
System.out.println("Do you want to go left or right?";

BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));

String a = br.readLine();

if(a.equals("left") {

System.out.println("You fell in a trap";

}

if(b.equals("right") {

System.out.println("You found a bong";

}

I would get an interactive fiction maker. Go download Inform 7 and go through the tutorials.

Older versions of GameMaker are free. I think you can still find them on site.

If you want something a bit more rich, there's Flash Develop that lets you make flash movies in an open source environment. And we all know how quickly flash games get made.
