I just got this warning from in my university email inbox.

All,
A number of staff and students have received emails with the subject 'Robert Gordon University Helpdesk Centre' advising of a system upgrade and asking for a reply with user names and passwords entered to confirm their account.

These emails are not legitimate and should be ignored and deleted.

We have taken action to block the delivery of this particular email but you should note that IT Services would never legitimately request your password. If you receive similar emails in future they too should be ignored and deleted.

There is no legitimate reason for anyone to ask for any password and for further information please view the link below

Why would anyone want your uni username and password? What could you actually do with it. Pretty much all I can do is check my emails and Moodle to find out what's going on in class.

Well here, uni id's and log-ins can give access to the financial and school records, while they might not be able to change stuff, identity theft is possible.

Once staff are involved, they do have access to other systems and records. If hackers gain access to those too, there would be lots more potential for harm.

True. That really sucks. I hope everyone saw that email. To be honest, I usually don't look at emails from IT. It's nearly always because this system or that one had to go offline. The last time I read one was when they had to take most of the intranet services offline over the weekend.

Hopefully, none of the people whose ID can cause damage, fall for the trick. I think our system was "under some sort of attack" not to long ago, had to bring the entire campus off line to to get resolved. Didn't release a lot of info, only that it was bad and to try not to do anything that wasn't absolutely necessary. Everything was running super slow to, so it was just frustrating.

That would be. I dunno. We usually don't have that many problems. There were a few more this year because they just introduced Moodle in September so I'm used to ignoring them.
