Wasn't the summer uniforms thing Napoleon?
The Germans also had problems, supply lines simply weren't capable of moving winter clothing due to it's low priority rather than a refusal to issue it. There was a drive to collect winter clothing from citizens and the concentration camps once the scale of the problem became evident. Strangely enough quite a bit of the pressure was applied from the home front where citizens were questioning why they were getting letts from relatives at the front asking for furs etc to be sent.

If you want details here are some. The Wehrmacht issued standard gun grease to the troops,it froze up and made the guns practically useless. The Red Army mixed gasoline with their gun grease making it flow smoothly in the coldest temperatures. The T34 Tank regarded by experts as the best tank of WWII,more T34s were manufacture than any other tank of any nation. The Ilyushin,"Sturmovik" ground attack aircraft extremely effective against nazi tanks. the Katyusha rocket launcher ordered in long ranks on the battlefield terrified the Germans, they called it "Stalin's Organ" because of the almost musical sound it made when launching it's rockets.
Interesting.

I say it was becuase of Hitlers mistakes.
He should have never invaded Russia, that was his biggest mistake which cost him the war. He also should not have declared was on the USA.
While you are correct that hitler declared war on the US, but it was ineviteble that the US would have declared war on Germany,in order to aid their British allies!

Agreed. In both Russia and Africa the Germans had bad supply lines.

must have been worrying?!?
his most loyal "allies", the reichmark (army) turned against hitler when the war started to go badly (july bomb plot)
Die Wehrmacht.... was the army. The Reichsmark was the 'coin of the realm' so-to-speak. As long as you're talking history, you might as well be accurate.

20/M/Liverpool, United Kingdom Join Date: Nov 2008 | There are many reasons that hitler lost WW2. There was two major causes and many little causes. The first major was that he allied himself with the Japanese Empire, who at the time were as Impirialistic as the Hitlers germany. This mistake brought the USA, with their superior resources such as manpower and industrial power, into the war with Germany. If the Germans hadn't allied with the Japs then even after Pearl harbour (which i believe the japanese would have still gone ahead with) there would have been two different wars. (at least for a while. Don't forget that the British empire at the time was also fighting a two pronged war, one with the Germans and another with the Japanese, and this solidarity in fighting the Japanese would, i believe, eventually brought the USA on the side of the allies against the germans) This brings me to the other major mistake, in that Hitler, (after defeating the french) did not have another overpowering victory over the allies. He was defeated in the battle of britain, and bogged down in the Soviet Union. If he a totally defeated the British Isles then this would have allowed him to concentrate on the Eastern front (as well as knocking morale in the middle eastern conflict, where the majority nation opposing him where British) This may have also prevented the USA from entering the War (at least in Europe) as British involvement was one of the primary reasons (Roosavelt being allies with Churchill) that the USA went to war with germany. The are many more minor reasons, such as extending himself in russia, being in conflict on so many fronts against one of the biggest Empires the world had seen (although the Brits got a drumming in Europe and in some parts of asia, singapore being a prime example, in the middle east and afica the german made very little ground, tieing up forces that would be needed elsewhere such as the eastern front)

I did World War Two as part of my GCSE history course and there was a girl in my class who, 2 weeks before the exam asked
'so who won the war then'
She got a B in her exam
Its kind of irrelevant but i enjoy it
Did she mean it literally or in the same way you did?
edit: sorry...that was someone else who asked if they really won the war...but point stands...was it a literal or figurative question? | | | Edited: June 05, 2009 @ 15:52 | |
