I found a cheap portable DVD player at Wal-Mart that can be made region free (region 0) or set to any specific region with a few clicks of the remote control:

Durabrand PDV-705

Turn on the power
Open the lid
Push the following number sequence on the remote control:
9 7 3 5
Use your arrow keys to select '0' for all regions
Exit setup

That's cool.

In Singapore, we get a lot of brands which are not the mainstream brands. They are all very VERY cheap. Mostly made in China but they will play anything you throw in. You can burn a pile of jpegs on a CD or DVD and it will give you a picture slideshow. You burn a pile of MP3s on a disc and it'll play.

Best of all, they come with Progressive scan, 5.1 jacks, everything.. all for about S$56 or about 28 Euros.

i hacked my dvd to make it region free had to download a little prog onto a data disc then put it into the dvd and voila region free dvd.

That's pretty cool, although couldn't you just change the language to German on
a DVD and turn off the subtitles?

There are a lot of DVDs available in German only, or produced in Europe with several languages (although they have English subtitles). They are not playable on most North American DVD players.

The best DVD player on the market is, surprisingly, only $200. It's the Oppo DV971H and, conveniently, there is an easy hack to make it regionless. If you're looking for a quality DVD player instead of a cheapo one, there's no reason to look at anything else.
