I have a lot of spare time at work and usually occupy it by reading and forums but I've always wanted to learn French just never the time to do so. I can't use speakers/headphones so is it possible, and if so what is the best way, to learn French online with just text?

I don't think you'll be able to get it right without listening to pronounciation and speaking it for yourself.

Would I possibly be able to learn to read/write it and in turn would that make it much easier to learn to speak it on my own time or would that not matter? Only foreign language I have ever learned is Russian and that took me 4 years of classes to become fluent but I'm assuming French is much easier to learn the basics of.

Yes you probably could, but imo you really need to hear how things are pronounced.

I am also Canadian French and the best way to learn it is with other people. You really need to speak with other francophones. Do you have french t.v. chanels where you live, or french radio stations? Listening to it really helps. But make sure you always listen and talk the same accent. There are a lot of people where I work that have to learn French. They have to know how to read, write and speak it. They all say speaking is the hardest. Hope this helps. Oh and remember, French is all about how it sounds, it's gotta sound good - that's why they have all those weird rules and exceptions in verbs, grammar and spelling.
Bonne chance
