No, there is no official language of the United States. English is the dominant language, but it's not written into law, and it's done that way on purpose.

I don't see why it would be a problem learning other languages.

I learnt French and German in school, and although I am far from fluent, I am glad to have my basic ability as a starting point for future learning.

English may be the dominating language in the US, but it is far from the only language.

Our public schools have been teaching Spanish all my life, -for those who elected to learn it.
The U.S. has had a national language since long before Obama got here and it will have the same national language after he's gone.
If the lawyers and judges choose to arque about it, it's their problem.
-And argue they will!

-My insignificant opinion, of course.

The town I presently live in has a lot of history. It became the new home to lots of immigrants over the centuries. You can find all sorts of ethnic groups here; Italians, Germans, Greeks, Polish, Yugoslavians, French-Canadians, Mainiacs*, and lately, a lot of Hispanic folks.

All of the 'older' immigrants have something in common. They all learned English. It was and is the common language, not only of this town, but the entire nation. But, if I seek out ethnic restaurants or church festivals that are run by any of these groups, it is possible to hear them speak in their own tongues, and if you can, speak to them, either in English or their own language.

I cannot understand the reluctance of many Hispanics to learn the language of the country they choose to live in. I do not see why all schools 'should' be teaching everyone how to teach Spanish, when, the immigrants all agree to learn English, as a condition of their acceptance here.

Every group is entitled to maintain its culture and heritage. I see nothing wrong with that. I do not see why Barac Obama feels it so necessary that the government mandate that 'all' must now learn Spanish. This is just as ridiculous as telling every student in Switzerland, they must learn Swahili! What is the point of it all? It is purely a political 'gesture' to win support from a certain group of individuals. But it is, in my opinion, morally and socially wrong!

As long as it's not limited to just Spanish I don't have any problems with that (I personally am learning Spanish and French)...
