Yeah don't take it to the shop.

Try this, it's a problem I had which sounds similar to yours.

Go to: Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Playback tab > Double-click "Speakers/Headphones" > Enhancements tab > Check "Disable all enhancements" (even though none of them are checked below).
