Hello... New today and wondering if any members play big band music from lead sheets, fake sheers ? I read music but really enjoy, New Age composition, improv from fake sheets, etc. I am a senior citizen who loves playing piano now I am retired more than ever. I want to learn from others and maybe I can contribute too. Smarylanne

I never bothered learning to read music, just didn't seem worth it.

TO a degree i agree, i think its only important if your going to work in music. or play with people who use music alot.

How do you pretend to read music?

I can read music to an extent, I can identify what all the notes are, but start adding all these weird squiggles and I'm f**ked.

If i'm learning something i either play by ear, or use tabs with the music in the background to get the timing.

I don't think everyone really gets what fake sheets are. It's not pretending to read, just chords to improvise to or structures and lyrics of popular music so you can pretend you know it when requested, jogging memory of songs.
I occasionally use fake sheets with the jazz band I used to be in, but now I'm only doing jazz in a big band where we get no such liberty.
