Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to "run the body's metabolism", it is understandable that people with this condition will have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism... Over five million Americans have this common medical condition. In fact, as many as ten percent of women may have some degree of thyroid hormone deficiency

From what i know... the symptoms of hypothyroidism is as follows...

1. Fatigue
2. Weakness
3. Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight
4. Coarse, dry hair
5. Dry, rough pale skin
6. Hair loss
7. Cold intolerance (can't tolerate the cold like those around you)
8.Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches
9. Constipation
10. Depression
11. Irritability
12. Memory loss
13. Abnormal menstrual cycles
14. Decreased libido

If you have SOME of these symptoms don't be worried, just get yourself checked over by your doctor if you are suspitious. It is possible to get some of these symptoms at the same time and not have hypothyrodism at all!

i hope this helps you

What makes me wonder, is I have had an under-active thyroid, been on the pills for 15 years, why do I always feel fatigued, drained, and confusion and forgetfull still there?

Shouldn't the pills had of cleared the symptoms up?

Yes, get blood checked regularly.

The signs and symptoms listed in tonkz post are accurate but you can have any of these symptoms, not necessarily all of them, to be diagnosed with hypothyroidism.
Depending on how advanced the hypothyroidism is, will depend on how many symptoms you have.
So you could be hypothyroid with extreme fatigue, brittle nails and hair and depression but not the others......yet.

The only true way to determine if you have it is from a blood test ordered by a physician.

OH and when was the last time you had your blood tested? You may need an increased dose.
Ask for a test that includes not only the TSH but a hormone level also. This gives a truer picture of what exactly your thyroid is doing.
Most people have to monitor, through their doctor, their thyroid activity for medication adjustments frequently.

Have any of you experienced your tyroid being positive one time and then checked again next time and its out of wack?
My doctor can't tell which way to treat my problem.
I lose 10 popunds...I gain 10 lbs. My hormones are a mess when I gain the ten punds...my periods come and go as they please. I have seen the gynocologist also. They don't want to do anything too rash yet because I also have a wacked out homone imbalance one time when tested..then a a fairly normal homeone balance next time.

Any suggestions or experiences you could share with tme?

Its quite possible that you have an underactive thyroid but sometimes it works and other times it dont. In this case you need to have it checked periodically and see exactly how it is working on any given week!
