i would recommend a trip to germany/switzerland. i went on a study abroad trip. when i left for the trip i thought i knew german pretty well, but after 2 months of nothing but german, i could see that i had a long way to go until fluency. 24/7 exposure to the language, nothing beats that!

I've been living in Germany for over 6 years, and to my shame my German is hardly better than when I arrived.

Try reading German-English short stories in parallel translation. There a few books available at Amazon. You will also find many excellent sites on the interent:
