It is NOT spelled "thru" in America! It's spelled "through" here too! Thru is just a quick way of speling it, though I agree it does look like a first grader spelled the sign. I think it's done that way on purpose because studies have shown, the shorter the words, the more likely a consumer is to read them. It's just marketing, that's all.
But, again, it is not spelled "Thru" in America generally...lol
Though, if enough fast food drive thu's pop up, people may start to think that it is, and before ya know it, they'll change the spelling in the dictionary.
