You realize higher taxes would be needed to fund this right?

The main reason a lot of people don't go to college is the lack of money, not the lack of intelligence or the willingness to work hard.

I've seen a lot of people that were in college simply to goof off, get drunk and have sex and such, but they usually didn't have any problem getting into college. Raising mandatory test scores or tuition fees or whatever would just harm, to an even greater extent, those that do wish to continue their education.

Getting more people to go to college will just make the diploma they do receive worth less.

So you are opposed to people learning? I would think the more people are educated the better.

If driving down wages are a good thing, sure.

Simple supply and demand. The more there is of something the less valuable it is (unless the demand for the product/service increases accordingly). The more people with a degree, the less those degrees are worth.

So you are for creating a society of classes?

There will always be classes in society.

Sounds like you are encouraging it though, rather than accepting it.

Besides it doesn't make sense. Jobs aren't created for degrees. Degrees are created for jobs. So it wouldn't matter how many people are educated or not, the same number of jobs will still be there. Education has many other benefits though, so the more that are educated, the smarter we are as a society, and LESS DEPENDENT on each other we are, which I know you would be in favor of.

Yeah, the same number of jobs will be there, but there will be more people with degrees seeking those jobs....which would give us a higher supply of "educated" people than there is a demand for, thus lowering wages.

A two year degree will land you behind the counter of a Burger King getting yelled and laughed at - Definitely not worth a 15 grand loan nor the headache of getting chased around for years after by debt collector's who don't understand that Whopper Floppers just don't make the same amount of money as a doctor or an attorney.

College should be just as free and public High School.

The only reason for making it pricey is to raise it above the heads of the already poor so that the competition for good jobs isn't as fierce.

The same type of people who want to limit the competition also don't want it free because it would raise thier taxes.

No school here is free. Graded school is paid for by community taxes, even if you don't have kids. Private schools charge. Communities can't help others any more than they already are.

That being said, it's funny that you have this thread. Actually there has been a significant movement by universities to make education free. MIT and Harvard are both offering free GRADED courses and are in the process of setting up a non-for-profit organization that wants to make their classes available online for free for anyone that wants to take the class. Brown university, Stanford and a few others are doing the same thing except they are going for setting up a profit organization that will have free classes to the public but is supported by donors. MIT has been doing free graded classes for years but only now is it really taking form and more and more are on the bandwagon for free higher education.

I didn't know this, but it sounds pretty cool!

I don't believe college ought to be mandatory for a number of reasons. I think everyone can agree that there are a large number of people who simply do not belong in college. I went to school with a large number of them. My own mother was one of them. And if I'm being honest, I'm married to one of them. It isn't a comment on their intelligence or ability in every case, but rather their desire to do one thing rather than another. Rather than go to the university, my wife was eager to get into the workforce feet first. We both make a decent living and are comfortable...I'm the one with the college degree and she makes ten thousand dollars a year more than I do. And I think that's AWESOME.

You are encouraging it by saying that too many people getting educated is a bad thing. So you would prefer that there be a hefty lower class of citizens, in terms of education and wages, to save the middle and upper class.

I have an online friend who is a professor at a university in China. He says that there is no tuition, and that books and room and board are free. As long as the student can do the work the student can remain in school and the longer they remain in school the better the job they can get.

Apparently there little or no partying by students as they take getting an education seriously.

The first semester at this university is all military training and every student in the university is an officer in the reserve military so they not only go to school for free for as long as they can do the work they get paid as members of the military.

It may not be the same at every univerity there I never asked.
