Let's have a thread dedicated to Howard Philips Lovecraft, the man who created Cthulhu and inspired many modern horror writers.

Have you read any of his stories? What's your opinion of his writing? Have a favorite story? That sort of thing

Personally, I find that his stuff can be hard to get into because his writing style is very antiquated (he was an anachronism in his own time), but it's well worth it. The idea that humans are not special and that we have no real power in the universe is very interesting, and horrifying.

I'd recommend "The Colour Out of Space" to newcomers. I've heard that it was Lovecraft's favorite of his own stories, and it has some great images. It's also a good introduction to the science fiction and horror aspects inherent in most of his fiction.

For anyone interested in reading Lovecraft, his stuff is available for free online: Dagon Bytes
