My family has cable, but a lot of people I know (mostly younger people; I wonder if there's a reason for that) have Netflix, and not just the DVD-borrowing service. They use Netflix to watch everything and don't have instead of cable/satellite. So I thought it'd be interesting to talk about what each of us uses to watch television and why we use that specific thing.

Basically, there are three options:
- Cable, satellite, or otherwise watching TV channels
- Netflix or other on-demand or streaming services
- No setup, either doesn't watch anything at all or only buys stuff or only downloads/watches stuff on their computer

Which are you, and is there a reason you use it?

You forgot both, a cable package and use of streaming to get stuff not on cable, or on-demand

For years I had cable...then satellite.

Then for years I had rabbit ears on my tv basically so I could just watch the news and weather...PBS has cool stuff too.

Now I've got Netflix, both streaming and dvd by mail, along with just a digital antenna for my tv so I can watch some current programming and still catch the news. It's a great deal cheaper than satellite or cable..that's the main reason I have things set up that way.

Other than that I'll get the occasional DVD from redbox or the library if I want something quicker that isn't available on instant streaming.

You kids and your new fangled talkin' boxes.

When I was young we watched dirt and liked it. And we ate trees.

We don't have a TV and if we want to watch a movie we go rent one at family video.

My parents are much more advanced then us. They watch Netflix for everything.

Im a DINK, and I never had cable when I was a kid, so it's still all fascinating to me. And my husband gets stuck at home a lot, so he needs a lot of ways to entertain himself without getting into trouble, or going stark raving mad.

Is DINK an acronym for something?

Double Income, No kids. Kids change everything when it comes to TV habits and what you have or don't have available. I suppose I could have just said no kids, but that was more letters, Only I had to explain it, and this is a lot more words.

Basically I'm just in economic acronym hell at work, and the brain is slow to switch out to normal speak.

My TV is off for huge lengths of time, meaning months. But I have to watch my NFL football during the few months it is is going, so I still end up paying for cable.

We have cable, can't be bothered to buy or rent videos. I rarely watch it. If it's on it's company. The cat watches.

I have less available than you though...and I have three kids. And for a long time...I had just the antenna and three kids.

And DINK is then heretofore defined as "person who can kiss my two income three kid having butt".

I get the best of both worlds. We are DINKs half the time when the kids are with their dad. The other half we get to be a family. It's perfect

I do think a kid is better than a tv, you just can't buy those as easily I have about the same probability of making a baby as a TV from spare parts.

Oh it's worth it...I just sometimes pine for the days when I could watch an episode of a show in less than three hours

I dunno it's probably harder to make a baby from spare parts.
