So we had a school board meeting a couple of days ago. The major item on the table is what to do with the sixth graders in the next couple of years. They either need to all be moved into one of the elementary schools in our district, or we need to fund a couple more teachers and an addition to the other elementary building.

It was outrage. People don't want them to go to our 'substandard' elementary school. (Apparently when the district hires new teachers their thinking is something like "Okay, you're a good teacher; you go to this school. You suck, so you're going to our other building." )

Anyway, their solution was to cut out the k4 program. That way they can get the additions needed without having to (god forbid) put any extra money into their kid's education.

It was disgusting though. They labeled the k4 program as glorified free daycare, those teachers nothing more than babysitters. What an awful slap in their faces. These are the people transitioning these kids into the structure of school, laying all of the foundation so that they will be able to read by the end of kindergarten. They have to lay the foundation of everything, and these penny-pinching bastards are going to right them off so that they justify cutting them out so that they don't have to pay any more? It was disgusting. I wanted to hit people, knock some reason into their heads.

I still kind of do. Our district is so frikken cheap. Our teachers work with nothing, and somehow they still care. How dare these people write off those teachers taking kids who have never been in school and not only prep them for that structure, but also find a way to get them past square one? Babysitters? Bleuch. I could spit on them.

I don't know if things have changed much since my kids were in school but I found out through a lot of fighting with the school boards, principals, teachers that they have policies in place that never even takes the children into any consideration at all. It's all about the policies and what's better for the higher ups.

The kids were the ones paying a huge price for 'funds' and 'policies' to stay intact.

Then they dare to lay blame on parents and the students if they aren't Einstein's.

Around here, school relies on levies. I remember before my daughter was in Kindergarten, they were telling me that Kindergarten here is all day (instead of half days) but it can only stay that way if the levy passed, if the levy didn't pass, Kindergarten would go back to being half days...or the parents could pick up the slack.

Where else in your district could they cut that could be picked up by some other funding?

Nowhere. They already work with nothing. Everything's outdated, extracurriculars are minimal. Our high school was built in the 30's and pretty darn soon that's going to need major renovations, if not a new building entirely.

I honestly don't know how these teachers do what they do so well with so little to work with. They need more funding. They need these levies.

Honestly, what I see happening at this point is that the sixth graders are going to move into the second elementary building for now. They're obviously not going to cut 4k, but I think they'll wait to impose any kind of levy until the repairs on the high school; that's too pressing. People will be pissed off about their kids going to other school, but they would be more pissed off about having to pay the extra funding, and then to pay again when the high school repairs come up.

When that time comes around I see the sixth graders being moved over into the high school, out of the elementary schools entirely.

It just irritates me so much that people can be so cheap about their kids school, that they can write off the teachers so easily to justify that cheapness.

I think this is like a lot of other issues in any city. People don't understand where the money is coming from.

I remember about 7-8 years ago talking to a retired teacher and he was saying something about teachers needing to be paid more. Then he tells me that teachers are paid about 40k per year. At the time, I was pregnant and working at a full time, just above minimum wage job and my husband was either working at one as well or had just been laid off from it. We made maybe 25k between the two of us, so I had a hard time going with the whole "40k isn't enough!!!" defense.

What makes it different for teachers is that they're having to pick up the slack from their school district so they're paying for a lot of things that they shouldn't have to, just so they can teach in an effective way.

Something has to give somewhere. I vaguely remember having to bring in school supplies when I was in school, but they were my supplies. Now, when my daughter goes to school at the first of the year, she brings in class supplies like crayons, glue sticks, facial tissue and things like that to be shared by the class throughout the year. That way, it's not the school or the town paying for it, but the people who are actually using it. I've heard that a lot of parents are upset about that policy though. Just can't win for losing.

This is required of us as well, and here too people grumble about it. It ammounts to maybe $20, $20 so that their kid has something to work with, and it annoys certain people. I hate this mindset.

But what the hell can the system do when all the people in the district flip their s*** at so much as the hint that it needs some extra funding to fix these things?

We don't have that problem here. Every one is very much for funding the Education system whether they have kids in school or not. It's the government that's pulling everything away from it and making it almost impossible for education to be had.

I don't know how it works for you guys to really compare, but we've been having issues with Walker on this as well, but at the end of the day, we're also the ones that voted him in, that are looking for ways to cut and spread our taxes.

That's exactly what's happening here except the three levels of government are constantly fighting and nothing gets done at all.

I agree Chisa, the K4 is one of the most important levels in our schools. Everything I needed to know to be successful in life, I learned in Kindergarten.
I don't want to place blame, but in my experience, current educators are not as dedicated to teaching as they were in the past, and many of them are in the career just to collect their paycheque and are not really concerned with the children's education.
Here, the school boards play politics, and it's the children that suffer.
I'm a firm believer that a good education is key to future success, and today's children are being short changed.

Our teachers are amazing though; our k4 ones in particular go above and beyond their job to make sure these kids learn what they need to know. They don't deserve to be so shamelessly written off.
