i am extremely anti war , however , i'm also extremely anti the way our society treats returning soldiers ... i believe they should receive more assistance when they return to civillian life .. seargent Deacon Cutterham recieved a medal this week for picking up and throwing a live enemy grenade .. his brave action prevented the death/injury of himself and others ... so they gave him a lump of metal to pin to his chest ... i think that servicepeople who do outstanding things should be rewarded with free university ..post service ' or training in their chosen field etc ... others were mentioned in the news report ... including aircraft engineer Michelle Ping who shielded a fallen soldier from enemy fire with her own body while she administerdd first aid ...she was mentioned in dispatches .... i believe that is merely a gesture that falls woefully short of what she should be entitled to .

What Medal was it??the VC.

That sounds about right. One of our blokes not long ago got the VC,they took him to England and the Queen presented it,they made it look like he was a real hero on the TV interview, but when they asked him how it happened he went to water and said that some of his mates were killed in the same battle.

What he did was very brave, but deep down I wonder does he really see it that way or sheer bloody stupidity that blinded him at the time.

i just think a bit of metal stuck to your nipple is insulting .... they are so quickly forgotten when they can't manage in civillian life .... i'm not sure being in the forces these days is that useful for many of them once they leave .... todays 'society' is so far removed from the buttoned down , do as your told.. life of a soldier

Yeah. it is. A friend of my uncle's once said that when he was RTU'd from the special forces back to his standard regiment, he was shocked to be shoved back into the old pattern of army life. Like, for instance, a sergeant age 30 plus being made to ask his CO for permission to get credit to buy a sofa - it's like being a child.

No wonder many can't adapt to civilian life. Add to that the experiences in combat, and it's a recipe for problems. I agree they need more than just medals - medals are not proper recognition in real terms.

It is an insult when you think about it,but I still can't help but feel the young men and women who are in these places fighting for our freedom instead of playing some silly war game on a Computer or X Box are the real hero's of today, and yes they should be given all kinds of benefits when they do decide to get out of military life, yeah sure they are the one's who put their John Henry on the dotted line and were willing to lose their lives "if need be",but we as a society should be paying more than just gratitude to them because of it and our Government's know this as well.

If thou cannot subtly and appropriately re-quote Hamlet, I don't care what thou does.
