Stand up to these liberal teachers.

A Colorado high school student says he quit the school choir after an Islamic song containing the lyric "there is no truth except Allah" made it into the repertoire.

James Harper, a senior at Grand Junction High School in Grand Junction, put his objection to singing "Zikr," a song written by Indian composer A.R. Rahman, in an email to Mesa County School District 51 officials. When the school stood by choir director Marcia Wieland's selection, Harper said, he quit.

He could've opted just not to sing the song, too. I think he was trying to make a statement, but I think he made the wrong one.

And my best friend wasn't allowed to be in our school choir as she was JW and we sang about God. Probably a good reason why religion should be kept separate from school when it comes to things like that to keep it all inclusive.

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Was it because it said "God" and not "Jehovah?" Pardon me for assuming that you know.

Sadly, the piece was chosen for other learning purposes and, since it was in Urdu, the teacher probably dismissed what it was saying in favor of the musical value.

And I say "sadly" because I feel like that is being overlooked.

Yeah. Singing a song doesn't entail that you believe in the content anyway, so it seems a bit of a silly thing to take so seriously.

Well our school was CofE and I think there's something about it that JW's don't like. I never thought to ask what it was though as I was only 10 at the time

That I can understand, it should be about the musical value really. Singing a piece in another language is a great thing for choirs to be able to do and Urdu is certainly an unconventional choice (at least compared to here where it's mostly French/German/Latin) so it would make them stand out.

I'm not sure I'd be comfortable singing it either, but I would just opt to not sing the song if I felt that way.

Quitting the choir over it makes it look personal, between the student and the teacher.

I don't think I'd mind but that's only because I've spent so long singing in church/cathedral choirs as an atheist so it doesn't phase me anymore. The music should take priority for me at least, that's the whole point of being in a choir. You could be singing about what you had for dinner but if it's sung properly with a choir then it will sound beautiful anyway.

It's one thing to just quietly make the choice not to sing that particular song but another to make a huge deal out of it, seems unnecessary.

This is exactly why we have separation of religion and government.... ALL religions should be kept out of public school. If religious stuff is kept to the church, temple, mosque... and home... this sort of thing would not happen.

Thanks for posting this uplifting news, hoppy. I'll bet this young man's parents are glowing with pride.

From your link and in his words:

"This is worshipping another God, and even worshipping another prophet ... I think there would be a lot of outrage if we made a Muslim choir say Jesus Christ is the only truth."

Wow, so well enlightened. Beautiful.

This won't be the first time he'll have to make a stand for what he believes in; it's heartwarming he's starting this young. I also hope the publicity of his courageous stance helps him in his future endeavors. This is something he can always be proud of. Amen!

Bravo!!

I sung "we all live in a yellow submarine" in school and that was also a blatant lie.

I wish I had stood up to those hippies.
