Now is the only time that it ever is.

You can never step in the same river twice.

Before time existed, there was only "is"....no "was"....or "will be". But when time was created as part of the universe, past and future were created as well, at least within that universe.

If the only time is now, then what about back then?

Outside of the existence of time, time, by definition, doesn't exist, therefore, in that condition, there can be no "back then"....and never could.

A pint of Carling was cheaper back then...

Time is a man-made concept.

Technically I'd say the only real tense is the past as the present is ever changing, we are in a constant state of flux.
