I'm thinking about getting a tattoo this year. It would be my first. If anyone on TFS already has tattoos, particularly men, where's a good place to start? Any advice/suggestions/warnings of any kind would be mucho appreciated.

IDK... I honestly don't picture you to be a tattoo person, but then again, i never considered you to be a pipe smoker either.

Up on your bicep or the meat of your shoulder.. That's where most people start.

And pick something that you like, and something that has meaning to you.

no names, no words.. you'll live to regret them.

This.

Also, keep in mind any artist won't mind you bringing your own picture of what you want or just to give a general idea of what you're looking for. I've got two and neither of them is visible when I have a t-shirt on. I'm very glad I made that decision.

Another piece of advice along those lines is...check the artist's previous work. I got a tattoo when I was 18 and it's really hard to tell what it is now. Part of the problem is my skin, but it's also way too small for the amount of detail that's in it, so it looks kind of blurry.

A few years later, a different tattoo artist looked at it and he told me that. My husband got a tattoo at the same time as I got mine and then he got one from this second guy. The second tattoo is far better. It still looks brand new even though it's 10 years old.

Due to the updating of the TFS TOS I cannot discuss my tattoo.

I suggest after you have your first tattoo that you should wait one year before considering getting a second.

It can be a little addictive. My tat artist said to me if i want something else done dont come back for a year and if i still want it he will gladly do it.

Turns out i didn't want a second one as much as i thought i did. You get a bit of an adrenaline rush afterwards so just watch out for that.

The first year after I got mine, there was NO WAY I wanted another one. Now after 18 months, I think I'm ready.

You could get a quote that means something to you tattooed, or a picture or symbol of some sort that holds personal significance. I wouldn't get a tribal/Japanese one though, I find them a bit silly.

I agree. I was thinking maybe a logo from a band I like, Tool. Their artwork is brilliant, a lot of it's by Adam Jones and Cam de Leon:
