1. Put rice in a microwave safe dish.
2. Pour boiling water over rice, about 2cms above level of rice (if you want 'fried rice' like firmness) or, 2.5 to 3cms if you want soft fluffy rice.
3. Cook on high for 10 mins.
4. Take rice out of microwave and mix/stir, just generally aerate.
5. Eat and enjoy

It's supposed to stick isn't it?

Just make sure you don't stir the rice. I made that mistake once and ended up with mush.

Exactly. That's what I'm trying to avoid: mush. Perhaps 'stick' was the wrong description.

Um, pour the rice into a pan, add water and salt.

Leave to boil, turn down heat if it looks like it's over flowing. Wait until rice is soft without stiring it then drain the water.

Serve and enjoy.

The key is to never stir the rice at any point until it is done cooking. Also, always keep the lid on the pan while its cooking.

Did all that and it worked. I also soaked and rinsed it well and this time it came out absolutely fine. Thanks Lili and everyone else.

It depends on the rice too. What type of rice are you using?
Japanese rice, most of them stick to each other, Thai rice are short and less stickier. Middle East rice we're using now doesn't stick at all (It's like each rice having their own compartment and walking around lalalalal )

And yes, less water and check if your rice cooker can also contribute a bit to non-stickiness.

Get a rice cooker! lol Stirring up the rice before it has absorbed all the water separates the starch from the rice and I think that's what makes it mushy. I always just let it cook a little longer than I'm supposed to. I don't think that I've ever ended up with rice that was too dry.

I live on rice, and learned a secret early that works great.

I start by putting the pot on high heat, and tossing in a generous pat of butter..

As soon as the butter is melted and starts to bubble, I toss in a cup of rice, and stir it until all the rice grains are well coated with the butter, and just barely start to turn golden brown.. (about a minute on high heat)

I then pour in two cups of water, stir the rice one time to make sure that none is stuck to the bottom of the pot, cover, drop the heat to a simmer, and wait 20 minutes.

Perfect rice, doesn't stick, and no need to rinse.
