Historian Ian Mortlmer has raised compelling evidence, in his book The Perfect King The Life of Edward III, that Ed.III's father, Ed.II was not murdered, by various different rumours, one being that the "gay"king(see Hugh Despenser) had a red hot poker or a copper rod shoved into his fundament in sept.1327 at Berkeley, by instigator Roger Mortimer(he goes into much more detail in his previous book on his name-sake,The Greatest Traitor). He also sheds light onto the fact that the much maligned(by 19th c. 'historians')Ed.III, was in fact a much better king than previously believed(19th c.writers tended to judge history by their own time, as we do, AND from the added luxury of Hindsight). I haven't finished reading my purchase yet, and I shall post a review when I've finished it. Does anybody have thoughts or views on these two controversial revisions? Mortlmer's arguments seem sound, and his painstaking research thorough. His style is remarkably readable, especially for students, without beind simplistic.

The trouble with most historians and the like ,They have their own ideas of what happened, from what they've read, and your supposed to blindly believe what they say is fact.I started to read The Shroud of Turin yrs ago with an open mind, but the further I got into the book the more I was convinced the writer had a real problem with people doubting his word.
Over the yrs I've read many books,on all sorts of topics, one other memorable expirence was with a book called More Lives than One,once again with an open mind, but by the time this writer had himself convinced that the people he hypnotised went back to the place of origin for souls,he lost me,he started to clutch at straws as far as I was concerned.
Some historians are good at what they do,and some quite honestly talk a load of rubbish.

Painstaking research, eh? What did he do, interview the eye witnesses?

Like the poster above, I feel that todays historians can only surmise, and that they base most of their findings on conjecture. And, even if one was to find a written record of events, who is to say that what one therein reads is simple truth or legend?

A red hot poker up the ass?! OMG! What a terrible way to die. I think of other ways I would want to die that would be much better than that.

I think it was rumour because he was homosexual. Even today gay people are ridiculed and sensationalised about. For some its more fun than the actual truth.

my friend is obsessed with history and he looked into this one. all evidence says its true. But if you gpo back 700 years people were extremely superstitious and inventive when it came to killing people.
