I was wondering if anyone new anyhting about grand prixs..my car died on me and wouldn't start for more than 3-5 sec...it would start and then die, so i replaced the fuel pump, now it will start and stay running if i tap on the gas a little bit, but if i let off the gas , it'll sputter a little and die...i don't know if there is air in the lines after putting the new one in, and has to be worked out..i was also told that it could be something to do with the seceruity, but after outting the new fuel pump in, it stays running longer than it did before..if anyone can give some advice, i would really appreciate it, i really don't want to spend a few hunderd dollars to take it to the shop...thanks

sounds like it could be your distributer. or something to do with timing. also, check the idle of the car. make sure its where it should be.. like 850 rpm.

Well, what happens is the on board computers reset themselves back to 0 so to speak..

Drive the car at least 10 to 20 miles on a highway if possible so the car's computer brains can relearn their settings..

If you have to drive on local, heavy traffic roads, you'll have to drive with 2 feet so the car won't stall..

The computer just has to relearn...

I'm a certified automotive technician & have over 20 years in the business.

Hope this helps you!

How many miles are on the car? I once had this problem with my old truck and the problem was that it was used so much the pistons were worn down and I had missing compression, which resulted in not enough power to idle on it's own. A quick fix for now is to increase the idle throttle.

does this happen everytime you disconnect the battery, or only if its disconnected for a long time...cause i put it in storage last year for winter, had the battery out for 3-4 months, and i don't remember haveing this problem?

When replacing the fuel pump, you're going to have to go through several start/stall processes before it stays running.

If it still doesn't stay running, my first suspect would be the fuel pressure regulator. These are a frequent problem with Pontiacs.

Eninere, unless this is a very old Grand Prix, the ignition and idle throttle are all electronically controlled and non-adjustable.

Why'd you replace the fuel pump, anyway? That's a hell of an expensive thing to replace without verifying it's the problem first.

I'd almost put money on the FPR.

Fortunately it's easy to test.

There's a little vaccum hose on a nipple on the FPR. Pull it off . If you can smell gas, it's bad. If you don't smell gas, reattach it then pull it off where it connects on the other end. If you can suck at all, it's bad. You can of course use a vacuum tester for this if you have one.

Careful not to get too much fuel in your mouth

I doubt it's air in the fuel lines or a faulty fuel system at all for that matter. More likely, your Idle Air Control is the problem. You could try cleaning it.

A friend of mine has been experiencing a similar problem with her 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. This what she has told me:

I have had my car to the dealership & of course it did not die on them. When they connect my car up to the computer it throws back no codes. My car dies with out warning sitting at an idle or going 55 mph. Any ideas what is the cause? So far my car always starts back up after waiting a minute or so.

I'd suspect the fuel filter first.
